House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has described the bomb threats against several Connecticut Democrats on Thanksgiving Day as “unacceptable” and “unconscionable.” These alarming incidents disrupted the holiday for lawmakers like Reps. Jim Himes, John B. Larson, Jahana Hayes, Joe Courtney, and Sen. Chris Murphy, involving threats ranging from pipe bombs to swatting attempts.
“America is a democracy. Threats of violence against elected officials are unacceptable, unconscionable, and have no place in a civilized society,” Jeffries said in response. He further asserted that these actions would not intimidate House Democrats, adding, “All perpetrators of political violence directed at any party must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
Some of the messages containing these threats were reportedly signed “MAGA,” referencing the Make America Great Again movement linked to President-elect Donald Trump. While the exact connection remains uncertain, these incidents have heightened concerns about the safety of public officials and their families.
Thanks to the rapid response of local and state law enforcement agencies, no devices were found, ensuring the safety of the targeted lawmakers and their families. The U.S. Capitol Police and FBI are both involved, with the latter actively investigating “numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents.”
Jeffries assured the public that such threats would not deter House Democrats from their duties. His office emphasized, “It is imperative that Congress provide maximum protection for all Members and their families moving forward.”
Although these threats primarily targeted Democrats, earlier in the week, Trump appointees and nominees like Rep. Elise Stefanik (N.Y.) and Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (Ore.) also faced threats. The bipartisan nature of these incidents underscores the urgent need to bolster security for all public officials.
A White House spokesperson confirmed that President Biden was briefed on the threats. The president expressed concern, supporting ongoing investigations while emphasizing the importance of safeguarding democracy and its defenders.
These threats highlight the growing vulnerabilities of public officials amid a politically polarized climate. Calls for unity and decisive action against political violence are more crucial than ever. As Jeffries stated, threats of this nature “have no place in a civilized society.”
As investigations proceed, the focus remains on holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring the safety of all elected officials. Democracy’s resilience depends on a collective effort to denounce and combat threats to its principles.
